most of the state's schools. but sandy hook school in newtown remains closed and may never reopen. truckloads desks, shelves, bulletin boards and abandoned backpacks. taken from the scene of the massacre to a recently closed school in nearby monroe. the former middle school is where the sandy hill students will resume classes. volunteer contractors spent the weekend installing smaller facilities for the younger students. >> when the children come in whenever the school has started they walk into a classroom that looks as close as possible as their classroom that they left." >> the sandy hill school remains a crime scene. state police working around the clock to determing what happened. >> we did sees significant evidence of the residents. it is a very painstaking processwe're going to do everything. that it takes to ensure that we uncover every bit of evidence, we're examining every facet of it, that we conduct as many interview to do paint a clear picture as to exactly how and why this tragedy occurred. >> the gunman, 20 year old adam lanza, reportedly smashed his computer as he

throughout the state have converged this morning to mourn the dead. >> reporter: we are in -- sandy hook rights here, across from the volunteer fire department. you can see quite a bit of activity. police, firefighters, 24 hours ago it was a different scene, children were running here from their school just around the corner, sandy hook elementary to this fire station after being told by police this is where they can come to be safe because of what was happening in the school. it was a scene of chaos and horror, terrified children, hundreds of them coming here. this morning much calmer, no chaos. nothing horrible but still the memory of what happened yesterday. now, the police are here obviously, state police still here. the investigation continues at the school. just around the corner. you can see the police over there talking to people coming in. making sure that the media don't crossover the line. taking flowers as people bring them in. we got here at about 1:40 this morning after flying in from the bay area. we went straight to saint rose church where there was a human memorial vigil

continues. the police officers who responded to radio calls about a gunman inside sandy hook elementary school described what happened. >> approaching the scene, there were approximately six children that were running from the scene, which added to our knowledge that, yes, this is real. >> reporter: first responders arrived within minutes of the 911 call that came in the morning of december 14. officers say they broke windows to get inside to search for the shooter. >> i heard the gunfire and i went towards it. >> reporter: investigators say the gunman, adam lanza, shot himself when he heard police coming. police chief michael keho says it was a horrific scene when he reached the part of the school where 20 first graders and six adults were shot and killed. >> i was devastated. absolutely devastated. i had no words. >> reporter: he says it was clear no one in the classroom could be saved. >> you feel a sense of guilt in that you weren't there quick enough to do that. but i also know that our response stopped that threat, and he could not proceed any further. >> reporter: newtown police

in a small connecticut town struggling to heal. nearly one week since the sandy hook shootings, newtown is still coping with a steady stream of funeral processions. more children were laid to rest today as makeshift memorials to the 26 victims continue to grow. randall pinkston reports. >> reporter: coming to newtown tonight, new hampshire police confirming that nancy lanza the first shooting victim of her son adam lanza, there was a memorial service for her today in new hampshire. meanwhile, here in newtown, more funerals for the victims of last friday's shooting rampage. a large portrait of 6-year-old benjamin wheeler stood outside trinity episcopal church in newtown, connecticut. about two dozen boy scouts lined up outside to honor the former cub scout.
